(McAllen, TX)  The City of McAllen has hired Christina Flores as its new Director of Human Resources.   The Rio Grande Valley native has five years of experience in the field, serving most recently as the Director of Human Resources and Civil Service for the City of Edinburg.  Flores has a broad range of expertise in the field, including safety/risk management; Worker’s Compensation; overseeing employee development and training; as well as policy development.

“The City of McAllen is proud to have Christina as our human resources director, leading the recruitment and development of our future and current employees to ensure that our organization has the best workforce to serve our citizens and community,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.  “She stood out amongst a strong pool of applicants based on her understanding of human resources and its role in employee growth.”

Some key accomplishments Flores implemented while director in Edinburg included launching an online applicant tracking system and electronic procedures for various aspects of employee benefits.  Additionally, she was instrumental in executing the city’s newly established civil service program within the city’s fire department.

Prior to Edinburg, Flores was the Assistant Human Resources Director for the City of Brownsville.  There, she was instrumental in instituting an online employee training program through the Texas Municipal League at no cost to the city.  She also assisted in carrying out the vision of the Youth Ambassador program by matching various departments with at-risk high school juniors and seniors and then-University of Texas at Brownsville for a summer internship program.

Flores began her career as an educator, teaching on various business related subjects; preparing students for the work force, including interviews; and networking with businesses to place students in various jobs.

“I am excited at the opportunity to be a part of the City of McAllen where I will be not only helping my colleagues grow and advance professionally, but also, I will be part of the progress the organization will make to continue making an impact in the lives of the citizens of McAllen,” said Flores.
