The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine celebrated the grand opening of its Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) on Thursday, Sept. 20, in the La Victoria community in Starr County. The UTRGV School of Medicine received a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration to develop the three AHECs, which will offer free healthcare to residents and educational opportunities for students enrolled in UTRGV’s health professions programs. Two more AHECs are scheduled to open—one in Hidalgo County and one in Cameron County. (Courtesy Photo)
