EDINBURG, Texas — Harvard Law School, in a landmark partnership with Hidalgo County and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD) Department of Sustainability, has joined forces to extend a prestigious Ivy League educational opportunity to the South Texas community. This landmark partnership culminates on April 24, 2026, as local students and parents celebrate their graduation from the Harvard Law School Zero-L program—a milestone that shatters traditional barriers to elite legal education.

The program was designed to help students who struggled in their adolescent years, navigating challenges in the legal system and traditional schooling. The cohort of participants will be honored by Judge Noe Gonzalez of the 370th District Court, Judge Fernando Mancias of the 93rd District Court, and Attorney at Law Veronica Bernal.

The Zero-L program is a comprehensive, six-module curriculum designed and taught by world-renowned Harvard Law School professors. Originally developed to prepare incoming law students for the rigors of a first-year curriculum, this initiative brings foundational legal knowledge directly to the Rio Grande Valley.

The program has since been expanded to include both high-achieving students who wanted to get involved with the project, as well as parent volunteers who are taking a translated version of the program in Spanish.

“This is deeply personal for us,” said Bernal. “We were them. We understand what it feels like to be underestimated, to question whether you belong in certain rooms, and to push forward anyway. This program is about making sure they don’t just see the door, but know they have every right to walk through it.”

Harvard Law School’s Zero-L is an online, 12-to-14-hour prep course designed to help incoming law students successfully transition into their first year (1L). Taught by Harvard faculty, the self-paced modules introduce foundational concepts such as the American legal system, how to read and brief cases, and overviews of core 1L subjects.
