MISSION, Texas — Professional golfer Abraham Ancer returned to familiar ground in Mission as he addressed community leaders, investors, and residents during the public unveiling of the Cimarron Country Club redevelopment project at the Center for Education and Economic Development (CEED).
Ancer, who was raised in Reynosa and graduated from Sharyland High School, is recognized internationally for his success in professional golf. During the event, organizers described him as one of the game’s premier players and noted that his decision to invest in the project reflects his connection to the Rio Grande Valley and his belief in its future.
Speaking to the audience, Ancer thanked Mayor Norie Gonzalez-Garza, the Mission City Council, the Mission Economic Development Corporation, project partners, and community members for their support.
Before discussing the future of Cimarron Country Club, Ancer acknowledged the investors and partners involved in the redevelopment effort.
“Projects like this are never accomplished by one person,” Ancer said. “They become possible when you surround yourself with individuals who share a common vision, are willing to invest time, resources, and expertise into making a vision a reality.”
He said the group was united by a belief that Cimarron remains a special place with significant potential.
“From the very beginning, we were united by the belief that Cimarron is a special place with tremendous potential,” Ancer said. “We saw an opportunity not only to revitalize an iconic property, but to create something that will have a lasting impact on this community for generations to come.”
Ancer described the project as personal because of the role the golf course and the community have played in his life.
“Standing here today in Mission, discussing the future of Cimarron is incredibly special to me,” he said. “This community and this golf course have played an important role in my life, and I know they have done the same in many others.”
“Cimarron has always been more than just a golf course,” he said. “It has been a gathering place where friendships were made, memories were made, and generations of families came together.”
“Our goal is not simply to preserve the legacy but to elevate it and position it for the future while maintaining the character and traditions that people have always loved,” he said.
Plans include reinvestment in the golf course and facilities to create what Ancer described as a first-class experience for residents and visitors.
“We want to create a destination that residents are proud to call their own and that attracts golfers from across Texas, Mexico, and beyond,” he said.
Ancer also emphasized opportunities for youth involvement in golf. He said the group is committed to supporting youth golf programs, player development, and the introduction of more young people to the sport.
“This investment is about much more than golf,” Ancer said. “It’s about creating jobs, attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and contributing to the continued growth of Mission.”
He added that successful destinations create opportunities for hotels, restaurants, retailers, and other businesses throughout the community.
“To the people of Mission, thank you for your support,” Ancer said. “Many years ago, this community invested in me. Today, I’m honored to be a part of an investment in the future of this community.”
The redevelopment proposal includes plans to restore and modernize Cimarron Country Club, one of the Rio Grande Valley’s most recognized golf destinations. Project leaders said the effort is intended to create a facility that honors its history while serving future generations of golfers, families, and visitors.
