IRVING – Governor Greg Abbott received the Sun and Star Legacy Award and showcased Texas’ thriving economic partnership with Japan during the Japan American Society DFW Awards Gala.
“Texas and Japan share similar values like hard work, freedom, and innovation,” said Governor Abbott. “That’s why we collaborate on issues like advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and on energy areas that require creative solutions to today’s largest challenges. Our shared values enhance prosperity for both Texas and Japan, and be assured that I will continue my work to strengthen the Texas-Japan relationship.”
During his remarks, Governor Abbott emphasized Texas’ position as an economic powerhouse, including its recognition as the Best State for Business for 21 consecutive years and its top ranking for economic development, job creation, and new business investments. The Governor highlighted Japan’s role as a key economic partner, noting it is Texas’ seventh-largest trading partner with more than $25.9 billion in annual trade.
Over the past decade, Japanese companies have launched more than 140 investment projects across Texas, supporting tens of thousands of jobs in industries like advanced manufacturing, energy, and life sciences.
At the gala, the Japan America Society of DFW presented the Governor with the 2026 Sun and Star Legacy Award for his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening economic and cultural ties between Texas and Japan.
The Governor was joined by Plano Mayor John Muns, Toyota CEO Tetsu Ogawa, Japan American Society DFW Senior Vice President of Licensing and Acquisitions Adam Zehner, Japan American Society DFW President Grant Ogata, Consul General Takeshi Koyama, and Texas Restaurant Association CEO Dr. Emily Knight.
