AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott and the Governor’s Commission for Women today announced the 2022 Women-Owned Business Series beginning with four weekly webinars Wednesday, August 31, through Wednesday, September 21. The webinars will feature subject-matter experts offering actionable advice for Texas women business owners and entrepreneurs on starting, growing, and sustaining a business.

“Texas is home to 1.25 million women business owners,” said Governor Abbott. “I am especially proud that we lead the nation for jobs created by Hispanic women, African American women, and veteran women business owners. Women who invest in themselves and their ideas for the future of their families and their communities are critical to our economy. I look forward to continuing working alongside all of our entrepreneurs and small business owners to ensure they have the knowledge and tools needed to succeed. Working together, we will continue to create even more new jobs across every region of this great state.”

Each of the weekly webinars, offered at no cost and in partnership with the Beacon State Fund, will take a deep dive into important topics and available resources for women-owned small businesses and women entrepreneurs in Texas.

Additionally, an in-person event, the Governor’s Small Business Series – Honoring Women-Owned Businesses, will be co-hosted by the Governor’s Commission for Women, the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism, and the Beacon State Fund on Thursday, October 6, in South Padre Island. The event will be an opportunity to network with other business owners and hear first-hand from experts who will share timely, relevant, actionable information on a multitude of small business topics.

The Governor’s Commission for Women will also host a women-owned small business pitch competition following the webinars and in-person event, with awardees selected for each region of Texas.

Women-Owned Small Business Pitch Competition

The Governor’s Commission for Women, in partnership with the Beacon State Fund, will also host a women-owned small business pitch competition following the webinars and in-person event, with awardees selected for each region of Texas. Women small business owners in Texas are invited to submit an application to the pitch competition explaining the challenges their business faces and the creative solutions, tactics, and adjustments used to face these challenges. Completed applications must be submitted by July 31, 2022, via the online application form. Finalists from each region will be invited to then present a live pitch to judges following one of the four webinars or the one in-person event. A Texas Junior Small Business Pitch Competition for young Texas female entrepreneurs ages 4 to 14 will also be hosted by national non-profit Lemonade Day and the Beacon State Fund in partnership with the Governor’s Commission for Women. EDINBURG, Texas – The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its second annual Cars & Stripes car-truck show presented by Bert Ogden Auto Group! Texas Cook’Em is one of South Texas’s biggest BBQ purses, awarding $25,000 to the winners. In 2021, Texas Cook’Em drew 85 cooking teams from across the state and over 8,000 citizens attended this State Championship event. 

The car show is just one of many activities to be held during the Texas Cook’Em event.

Texas Cook’Em will also include vendors, live music, a children’s fun area and of course delicious barbeque. Gates will open at 11 A.M. for attendees to enjoy family fun activities all day long.

A performance by the Red Not Chili Peppers will kick off the FREE concert. At sunset, attendees can expect the Sizzle & Stripes Firework Show presented by H-E-B. Followed by the performance of Texas Country Star, Aaron Watson. 

Registration for vehicle entries is now open. Judges will award the Best of Show Car, Best of Show Truck, Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Chevrolet, Best Ford, Best Mopar, and Best Pontiac. There is no registration fee to enter your truck or car into the show.

EL PASO, Texas — The City of El Paso is excited to announce that the Teen Court Program of the Municipal Court has received a $4,350 grant by the Texas Bar Foundation. 

The funds will be used to purchase training supplies needed for the program throughout the year and for an upcoming Teen Court Orientation.  

“In the five years since its inception, the Teen Court Program has been successful because of hard work and commitment provided by Municipal Court staff,” said Municipal Court Sentencing Supervisor Adrian De La Rosa. “This grant will help us achieve our goal of helping and working with the juveniles and their families to comply with the Teen Court program requirements in order to get their cases dismissed.” 

About Teen Court  

The Teen Court Program is a real justice program run by teenagers for teenager and serves as a peer court for misdemeanor and traffic offense. Teen volunteers perform the roles of a juror, court clerk, bailiff, attorney, or prosecutor. Teen Court provides juveniles, who have been charged with a misdemeanor offense, an alternative means by which to have their case heard. Upon successful completion of the court ordered punishment the juvenile defendant will have their case dismissed. Teen Court also provides alternative sentence if the juvenile is found guilty.

LAREDO, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers seized hard narcotics in two separate unrelated enforcement actions that totaled over $3,400,000 in street value. 

“Officers at the Laredo Port of Entry have heightened their narcotics interdiction and border security posture to combat drug smuggling attempts,” said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “Through targeted and proactive law enforcement activity, CBP employees help dismantle trafficking organizations and prevent their illicit products from entering the U.S.”

The first enforcement action occurred on June 14 at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, after CBP officers encountered a Ford F350 arriving from Mexico. The vehicle was referred for a canine and non-intrusive inspection system examination, resulting in the discovery of 75.75 pounds of alleged methamphetamine within perishable goods. The narcotics have an estimated street value of $3,339,969.

The second enforcement action occurred later that day, at the World Trade Bridge, after CBP officers encountered an express consignment service truck arriving from Mexico. The 2012 Freightliner was referred for a canine and non-intrusive inspection system examination, resulting in the discovery of 3.17 pounds of heroin within a cardboard package. The narcotics have an estimated street value of $126,984.

The narcotics together have an estimated street value of $3,466,953.

CBP seized the narcotics and one vehicle. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents are investigating both seizures.

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton led a multistate letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opposing its proposed rule to impose a crushing matrix of new climate-related disclosures on publicly traded companies and other entities. The rule would turn the SEC, which regulates capital markets, into a new environmental regulatory body, without any lawful authorization for that unprecedented expansion of power. The proposed rule would also cost American businesses millions of additional dollars in regulatory compliance, which will be passed on to the consumer and taxpayer, with little to no environmental benefit.  

“The host of new requirements in this Proposed Rule are motivated by a small number of environmental activists who seek to steer the economy away from fossil fuels and to impose controversial environmental, social, and governance (ESG) mandates,” reads the letter. “If such a policy is to be pursued . . . there is a body constitutionally empowered to make that choice: Congress. By acting outside of its statutory authority, the SEC has usurped the role of the People’s elected representatives to set the United States’ policy on climate change.” 

“Biden is weaponizing all the levers of federal power to impose his radical, pie-in-the-sky environmental agenda on every sector of American society,” said Attorney General Paxton. “The SEC’s proposed rules are unlawful, unconstitutional, and just plain bad policy. My fellow attorneys general and I are sending this letter to make that clear. If the rules get enacted, I’ll sue—and I’ll win.”

Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to secure the border, stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas, and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal behavior between ports of entry.

Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to more than 263,900 migrant apprehensions and more than 16,240 criminal arrests, with more than 13,500 felony charges reported. More than 5,400 weapons and over $41.5 million in currency have been seized.

Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden’s open border policies.

“When Mexico last week granted federal humanitarian travel permits to 15,000 U.S.-bound third-country migrants who’d formed the largest caravan in Mexican history, most planned to head straight to the border to cross illegally into the Texas towns of Del Rio and Eagle Pass,” writes Todd Bensman with the Center for Immigration Studies. “Few, if any, of those thousands are finding their way over the Rio Grande into the Border Patrol’s Del Rio Sector. Mexican state police are blocking northbound commercial buses at the bus station in the Coahuila state capital of Saltillo, and at many other stations, and emptying migrants from trucks and vans at checkpoints on all roads leading into that state’s border cities of Piedras Negras, across from Eagle Pass, and Acuna, across from Del Rio, according to Mexican press reporting.”

The Mexican state police response comes after Governor Abbott reminded Coahuila Governor Miguel Angel Solis of his security obligations under the memorandum of understanding the governors signed in April.

Last Saturday, a command-and-control post was established by the Texas National Guard at the Anzalduas International Bridge in preparation for a mass-migration response. The post will allow effective coordination of partner agencies on the ground by directing joint and multi-agency operations during a mass-migration event.

“So long as there is a threat that exists here, our job is to remain proficient, competent, capable, and ready to respond, day or night,” said MAJ Jason Cordaway, Task Force East Commanding Officer.

Texas National Guard Seize Transnationally Trafficked Narcotics

Texas Army National Guard soldiers assisted law enforcement in seizing transnationally trafficked narcotics. The guardsmen detected a group of men illegally crossing the Texas-Mexico border and interdicted the group, who dropped the packages of narcotics and fled the scene. The narcotics were seized by law enforcement as the men returned to the Mexico side of the border.

DPS engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a smuggler through several counties. The smuggler eventually came to a stop and was charged with the smuggling of persons and evading arrest.

Criminal Trespassers Apprehended By National Guard Soldiers, DPS On Privately Owned Ranch

Texas Army National Guard soldiers assisted DPS state troopers in apprehending a group of illegal migrants last week. The illegal migrants were spotted by federal agencies, which called the soldiers and state troopers to track the group within a large stretch of privately owned ranch land. The Guard notes it is common for illegal migrants to avoid detection by border patrol agents by trespassing into ranch lands on foot.

Mission, TX- The City of Mission is breaking barriers. Former Councilwoman for Place 3, Norie Gonzalez Garza, will be sworn in Monday afternoon as mayor. She will be joined by officials from across the Rio Grande Valley as she officially takes her oath of office at the Mission Event Center on June 20 at 4:30 p.m.

Gonzalez Garza, a lifelong resident of the municipality, is the first woman to be elected mayor of Mission. 

Jessica Ortega, a two time incumbent for City Council Place 1, will also be sworn in for her third term. The public is invited to attend the swearing in ceremony.
