EDINBURG, Texas – The South Texas International Airport in Edinburg is set to undergo a major transformation with the announcement of $10 million in state funding through the passage of the General Appropriations Act (HB 1). This substantial investment will be utilized for infrastructure improvements at the airport, marking an exciting venture for the City.

Texas Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and the House Chairman on Transportation Rep. Terry Canales were instrumental in securing the airport funding, along with the support of Governor Greg Abbott. South Texas International Airport currently serves as a vital hub for state and federal agencies involved in border security operations. Furthermore, the airport serves as the primary emergency response staging area for the Rio Grande Valley region. The investment of funds will facilitate the enhancement of existing infrastructure and the expansion of the airport runway, paving the way for improved operational capabilities and heightened efficiency.

“I am pleased to have worked with the legislative delegation as Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, in collaboration with Chairman Terry Canales, to secure $10 million for the South Texas International Airport in Edinburg. Investing in airport infrastructure is critical to ensure safety, support economic growth, and enhance connectivity,” Sen. Hinojosa said. “I appreciate the leadership of Mayor Garza and the City Council for their unwavering support and advocacy. This funding, combined with the $10 million in previous grant funds for the hangar expansion, will have a significant positive impact on the airport, the City of Edinburg, and the Rio Grande Valley.”

Among the planned upgrades, the funding will be allocated to various aspects such as threshold lighting, beacon lighting, airfield lighted signage, navigational aids replacement lamps, fixtures, power supply, transformers, and the integration of advanced technologies. These improvements will significantly enhance the airport’s infrastructure, enabling it to meet the evolving needs of the region and bolster its pivotal role in critical operations.

In a show of commitment, the City of Edinburg will provide match funding in the amount of $1,111,112.00, bringing the total investment to an impressive $11,111,112.00. This local investment highlights the dedication of the City to ensure the South Texas International Airport remains at the forefront of aviation excellence.

“The City of Edinburg is immensely grateful to Governor Abbott, Senator Hinojosa, and Chairman Canales and their unwavering support recognizing the importance of South Texas International Airport in Edinburg,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said. “The collaboration between local and state entities has paved the way for this monumental investment, which will contribute to the continued growth and prosperity of the region.”
