U. S. Chamber of Commerce – While states were given $39 billion for childcare support earlier this year, Congress didn’t give them enough flexibility to best spend those funds. Why it matters: Access to childcare is a major barrier keeping many workers from returning to the labor force. Much of the funding “does little to encourage the proliferation of much-needed new and innovative providers,” writes economist Abby McCloskey. Be smart: The most comprehensive fix, proposed by Republican Members of the House Ways and Means Committee, is allowing states to give unspent childcare funds “directly to families for whom the cost of childcare is a barrier to work and high-quality childcare is out of reach.” |
