Mission, Texas — After nearly 50 years, a Valley hero will finally be laid to rest. A memorial and final salute will be held Thursday, March 12, 2020, at 11 a.m. for Missing in Action/Killed in Action PFC Joel Corona. The Texas Veterans Land Board made the announcement Thursday, March 5, 2020.
The service will be held at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Born on June 21, 1949, the army soldier began his tour on June 29, 1970, and died on November 8, 1970, in Vietnam. The remains of the Pharr native were never recovered. Until now, he has not had a memorial service.
The City of Mission will also host a wreath-laying ceremony for the family after the memorial service at Mission Event Center where the Vietnam Traveling Wall will be on display March 12-15. Please help us to honor PFC Corona’s service and ultimate sacrifice!Â
