PHOENIX, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men’s golf team posted its second straight top-three finish by coming in second place at the GCU Invitational on Saturday at GCU Golf Course.
UTRGV finished in third place earlier this week at the Border Olympics. It’s also the fourth top-three finish in the last five tournaments.
UTRGV posted a final round 283 to finish with a three-round score of 843. UTRGV finished in front of UTEP and Missouri, who tied for third place with a three-round score of 844. Kansas City won the team title with a three-round score of 829 after a final round 276.
Senior Alvaro Hernandez posted the team’s best finish as he tied for 14th with a three-round score of 210. He closed out the invitational with a final round one-under-par 70 as he finished five strokes off the lead.
Senior Pedro Lamadrid also posted a final round one-under-par 70 as he finished tied for 19th with a three-round score of 211. Redshirt sophomore Alex Summers also finished tied for 19th with a three-round score of 211 after posting a final round
Junior Luca Portelli finished with a three-round score of 216 after posting a final round one-over par 72 as he finished tied for 37th. Junior Henry Fisher finished tied for 54th with a three-round 218 after posting a final round 75.
Columbia’s Derek Kim and Kansas City’s McCain Schelhardt finished tied for the top spot after both posted a three-round score of 205 with final rounds of 68.
UTRGV will be back in action from March 25-26 when it hosts The Big Texan Invitational in Kerrville.
