EDINBURG, Texas – The City of Edinburg and Hidalgo County announce traffic and parking changes for the upcoming construction of the Downtown Parking Garage Project.
Beginning in early November, the City of Edinburg will begin construction on the new Downtown Parking Garage, located on the corner of McIntyre St. and N. Closner Blvd. Once completed, the proposed $6.2 million project will be a three-story garage with 268 parking spaces.

To keep the public safe, car and pedestrian traffic will be temporarily rerouted during the 12-month planned construction. The lot will close to the public on Wednesday, November 5, and construction will begin on Thursday, November 6. In front of the construction site, one southbound lane of N. Closner Blvd. and a section of W. Kuhn St. will be closed to allow construction crews to access the site, transfer equipment, and unload materials.
“This project represents an important investment in the future of our community. The new Downtown Parking Garage will not only improve accessibility for jurors, visitors, and employees at the courthouse but will also support the continued growth of our downtown,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said. “We ask for the community’s patience during construction, as these temporary inconveniences will bring lasting benefits to our city.”
The sidewalk in front of the construction zone on N. Closner Blvd. will also be closed for the duration of the project; therefore, all foot traffic will be rerouted to N. 10th Ave. The city has expanded the sidewalks along N. 10th Ave. to provide residents with a safe walking route. Temporary signs will be posted along N. Closner Blvd. and N. 10th Ave. guiding pedestrians safely to the courthouse.
Jurors and the public will be directed to park in the L2 and L3 parking lots located along N. Closner Blvd. In addition, shuttle accessible public parking is also available in lots A2 and A3, located on the corner of S. 12th Ave. and E. Mahl St. Both of these parking lots offer free accessible transportation to the courthouse by the Valley Metro shuttle. The Valley Metro shuttle runs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and stops every 15 minutes at each parking lot. To view route information, visit the Valley Metro website.
The County is also moving forward with the construction of a new parking lot at the corner of N. 12th Ave. and E. Loeb St., adding 104 spaces to help ease parking around the courthouse. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late December. Once finished, Valley Metro will include a convenient stop at the new lot on its bus route.

“We want to thank the City of Edinburg for the construction of this Parking Garage that will vastly improve the parking situation for the County Courthouse and the entire downtown square,” said County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “We ask the public to please be patient and to adhere to all of the traffic signs during this construction period. We want to ensure everyone’s safety, from the pedestrians visiting the courthouse to the drivers operating on the downtown streets.”
The city and county strongly urge the public to follow all traffic signs and routes. Drivers should use caution when turning or crossing intersections and be aware of all pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are urged to only walk on designated sidewalks and to cross at intersections with traffic lights.
