Pharr, Texas – The Tobacco Prevention & Control Coalition meeting has been moved up to Wednesday, June 20th at the Behavioral Health Solutions conference room at 5510 N. Cage Blvd., Suite N, Pharr, TX 78577. With the city of Progreso’s recent approval of a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance, 20 out of 22 cities in Hidalgo County are now considered smoke-free. The Coalition will continue to focus on bringing the remaining cities onboard, as well as working with those cities that have adopted smoke-free ordinances and providing resources to help them implement and enforce the policies.

All members of the community are invited to attend to learn about the coalition and its collaborative partners and how advocating for tobacco preventative initiatives is an important topic in our community. Tobacco use creates many burdens such as social and financial hardships, and the coalition seeks to mobilize members of the community to raise awareness and educate the public on the damaging effects of tobacco. The monthly coalition meetings are held on the last Wednesday of every month from 12 pm to 1 pm, with lunch provided.

The Hidalgo County TPCC is a coalition effort of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, located in Pharr, Texas. The Coalition was established to empower Hidalgo County to affect individual and social change through cooperation, sharing and coordination of resources focused on preventing and reducing the illegal and harmful use of tobacco products. The TPCC’s goals are to prevent tobacco use among young people, promote compliance and support adequate enforcement of federal, state, and local tobacco laws, increase cessation among young people and adults, eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke, reduce tobacco use among populations with the highest burden of tobacco-related health disparities, develop and maintain statewide capacity for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control.
