BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Adventure has officially started at Camp RIO for its 2026 summer camp season. Located on the historic Lula Sams property in Brownsville, Texas, Camp RIO offers children ages 5-14 an opportunity to unplug, explore the outdoors, and create lasting memories through hands-on experiences and outdoor adventure.
Camp RIO’s summer camp season kicked off its first session on June 7, but will continue to run through July 31, offering both day camp and overnight camp options for families across the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. Transportation is available from McAllen, Weslaco, and Harlingen, and financial assistance is available to help make camp accessible to more families.

Known throughout South Texas for its immersive, nature-based programming, Camp RIO offers a wide variety of activities, including archery, canoeing, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, team-building activities, and the camp’s popular adventure course.
“Camp RIO provides a safe and exciting environment where children can build confidence, develop new skills, and connect with nature,” said Camp RIO Director Nancy Mance. “Each summer, campers create lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences, and we are excited to welcome families back for another season of adventure.”
Camp programs are open to children ages 5-14, with weeklong sessions designed to provide age-appropriate activities that encourage learning, leadership, and fun. Teens ages 15-17 may also apply to participate in a special three-week leadership session held in July. Enrollment for the teen program is limited.
Camp RIO is accredited by the American Camp Association and remains the only camp of its kind in South Texas, serving families from across the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
