McAllen, Texas (March 29,2017) — South Texas College will welcome educators from across the Valley to its 12th annual Summit on College and Career Readiness at Region One Education Service Center on Monday, April 3.

The annual event, which STC has organized to address key issues in education will take place from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Region One located at 1900 W. Schunior St. in Edinburg.

STC’s Summit will include a day-long slate of relevant and extremely timely issues facing educators today. Some items discussed at the event will include presentations on the Texas Pathways Project by Dr. Mike Flores, president of Palo Alto College; dual credit student success by Dr. David Plummer, STC Vice President for Information Services, Planning, Performance and Strategic Initiatives; implementing national work on a local level for math pathways to increase student success; and deep discussion regarding college readiness and placement  by Kathy Zarate, Development and Adult Education Program Specialist with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Among the most moving portions of the Summit will be the voices of the students themselves, who will share their experiences with career pathways.

“Student testimonies are very powerful,” said Darci Cather, Liaison with STC’s Office of Professional and Organizational Development who will be moderating the event with students. “What we typically see is that many students come to college knowing what they want to do, and as they go through their journeys they change their minds. What pathways are designed to do is help those students make those choices incrementally so they are not so overwhelmed with choices when they come in.”
