MCALLEN, TX (May 25, 2017) – South Texas College is gearing up for summer camps that will enable students to engage in fun and interactive activities led by esteemed professionals in the field.
STC’s Robotics & Automation Summer Camps will introduce students ages eight to 17 to aspects of automation and real-life robotics technology. Kids who are interested in robotics, computer science, engineering, math, automation technology or advanced manufacturing are urged to attend the second annual robotics camp taking place at STC’s Technology Campus.
Summer robotics camps will take place all summer long. The cost is $175 per student. Children will receive breakfast, lunch, a camp t-shirt as well as a certificate of completion. STC will also host summer camps at its Pecan Plaza located at 2621 W. Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.
Violin and guitar camps seek to introduce children to the fundamentals of the instruments, and will take place from June 5 to June 23. The cost for violin classes is $110, and includes violin rental. Cost for guitar classes is $90, and students are required to bring their own instrument. Camps will take place at Pecan Plaza room PCN1-904 for guitar and PCN1-804 for violin. These camps will be instructed by Joel Fis, acclaimed violinist who has been teaching Valley-wide and across the border for the last 20 years.
Kids sewing camps are sponsored by McAllen ISD and will enable students to learn the fundamentals of sewing with fun projects. Sewing machines are provided and every student will receive a sewing kit. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by McAllen ISD for the camp which lasts from June 5-9. The cost to attend the class is $121. The camp will take place at Pecan Plaza PCN1-806. Sewing will be led by Adriana Cantu, STC professor as well as owner and operator of CoverCap, a company specializing in flame resistant fabric for industry.
This year’s summer ‘Choir Camp’ will allow students to explore an array of songs, dancing and singing games that will enable them to learn the basics of the art of singing through hands-on activities in a fun and welcoming environment. Breakfast and lunch will be provided by McAllen ISD for the camp, which takes place from June 5-12. The cost is $90 per student. Choir camp will take place at Pecan Plaza PCN1-802. Instructing the class will be Betty Cortez, a graduate of the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City, as well as choir director and music specialist for more than 15 years in Mexico and the U.S.
