RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that guard Tyson Smith, who played the 2018-19 season for the men’s basketball team while working toward a Master of Public Affairs, has signed a professional contract with Arena-Orbi of the Georgian A-League.
Arena-Orbi’s first game is in a tournament on Dec. 25. League play starts in January.
Last season, Smith averaged 10.8 points on .394 shooting from the field, including .364 from the behind the arc, and .817 from the foul line with 2.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals in 37 games (26 starts). He led the team in scoring nine times, rebounding twice and assists seven times. Smith reached double-figures in scoring 20 times, including three games of 20 or more points.
He was a driving force behind UTRGV’s postseason run, averaging 19.8 points on .525 shooting from the field, including .481 from behind the arc, and .889 from the line, with 1.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals in four games during the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
