EDINBURG, Texas – Starr County drug smugglers attempted to exploit lack of border infrastructure in two separate incidents.
Last night, Rio Grande City (RGC) station agents received a report of multiple drug smugglers running north of the Rio Grande near Garceno, Texas. Responding agents located an abandoned Chevrolet Tahoe. A search of the vehicle revealed nearly 350 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $275K.
This morning, agents from the RGC station working in La Rosita, Texas, observed several smugglers load bundles of marijuana into a Chevrolet Suburban. The vehicle traveled north at a high rate of speed, but abruptly turned around after seeing the responding agents. At the riverbank, the driver abandoned the vehicle and swam to Mexico. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of more than 580 pounds of marijuana valued at $465K.
