EDINBURG, Texas – On Tuesday, three failed drug smuggling attempts lead to the seizure of over 1400 pounds of marijuana.

Tuesday afternoon, Fort Brown agents working near Brownsville, Texas, observed several subjects load suspected bundles of narcotics into a silver Volvo sedan and leave the area at a high rate of speed. Moments later, agents witnessed the driver lose control of the vehicle, crash through a fence and come to a stop after striking a tree. Multiple subjects attempted to flee the scene but were apprehended. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of over 70 pounds of marijuana.

Meanwhile, Falfurrias agents arrested a United State citizen and seized over 170 pounds of marijuana in a failed drug smuggling attempt at the Falfurrias checkpoint. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $139K.

That same night, Rio Grande City agents working near Fronton, Texas, observed a Chevrolet Suburban driving away from the Rio Grande at a high rate of speed. As Border Patrol units arrived to the area, the driver returned to the riverbank and abandoned the vehicle. Agents located the abandoned suburban loaded with several bundles of marijuana. The drugs weighed over 1,200 pounds worth more than $960K.

Border Patrol processed the subjects and cases accordingly.

The public is encouraged to take a stand against crime in their communities and report suspicious activity at 800-863-9382.

Even with the spread of the COVID-19 virus, human smugglers continue to try these brazen attempts with zero regard for the lives they endanger nor to the health of the citizens of our great nation.  The U.S. Border Patrol agents of the Rio Grande Valley Sector will continue to safeguard the nation and community against these criminal elements.
