Texas Border Business
WASHINGTON— Representative Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released a statement in response to President Trump voicing his agreement with Democratic lawmakers, including Congressman Cuellar, that enhancements need to be made at U.S. ports of entry:
“I am encouraged to hear that the President is finally listening to and agreeing with lawmakers that we must expand and modernize our ports of entry. Border security is multifaceted— it includes protecting the borders of the United States and facilitating legitimate trade and travel. I have repeatedly stated that we must secure our borders with advanced technologies at and between our ports of entry. Besides Border Patrol agents, we also need additional U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and Agricultural Specialists to enable legitimate trade, contribute to American economic prosperity, and protect against risks to public health and safety. At the ports of entry, personnel, technology and infrastructure are vitally needed.
“Utilizing antiquated technologies at our ports of entry to ensure safe and secure trade and travel would be just as foolish as building a 14th century wall to secure areas between our ports of entry. As a Member of Congress and lifelong advocate for tighter border security, I will continue to support 21st century solutions that will secure our borders in an effective and efficient way.”
