SULLIVAN CITY, TX — Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced that Sullivan City has received $78,000 in federal funds from the USDA Rural Development Program. The City was awarded $46,000 through the USDA Rural Development Communities Facilities Program and $32,000 through the Rural Development Business Program.

Congressman Cuellar said, “It is critical that we invest in the infrastructure and resources for the development and future of our rural communities. These funds from USDA will allow Sullivan City to create a safer environment for its citizens and better opportunities for small businesses in the area. USDA has been an important partner when it comes to addressing this issue in rural communities, and I thank them for working diligently to create these necessary programs.”

Congressman Cuellar added, “I will continue to secure funding and work towards building effective, local responses to this important issue.”

Mayor of Sullivan Leonel Garcia said“We are very excited, blessed, and thankful to have received the support of Congressman Cuellar, USDA and Roel Gomez in receiving these two grants. Our community is extremely grateful and will benefit greatly as this funding will provide additional lighting on the expressway to show that although small, Sullivan City is growing and is looking to attract new business. We will also be able to provide much needed equipment to our city crews to assist in day to day tasks but most importantly we will be well prepared in the event of an emergency or natural disasters. We truly believe that as we work together with our state and federal partners, we are opening the doors to new opportunities for the area. We look forward to working closely with all involved as we continue the progress and growth of Sullivan City. We believe that the best is yet to come.”

“Reliable infrastructure is a necessary tool for rural Texas communities,” said Edd Hargett, USDA Rural Development State Director. “The investments announced today are ensuring the safety and prosperity of Sullivan City now and into the future.”

Communities Facilities Program

The $46,000 Communities Facilities Grant will be used to purchase a 50 Kw generator, hydraulic dump trailer, power poles, a heavy-duty pump, mobile power light towers, and chainsaws. This will allow the city to respond to weather emergencies in a timely manner without depending on external entities for equipment. This funding will ensure safer conditions during weather emergencies for all residents.

Rural Business Development Grants

The $32,000 Rural Business Development Grant will be used to install LED street lights. The lights will be placed on existing light poles, or on new light poles as necessary along a two mile stretch that runs east to west on the interstate. This project will enhance economic development of the community by attracting small and emerging businesses to Sullivan City.
