Alamo, Texas –  A group of thespians from PSJA Memorial Early College High School recently advanced to the UIL Regional Competition with their One-Act Play titled “Defying Gravity,” after a successful performance at the 6A Area Contest in Zapata this past weekend.

The play is about the 1986 Challenger disaster. “Defying Gravity” artfully interweaves the past with the present and the lives of participants and bystanders, drawing parallels among painter Claude Monet’s artistic quest, the zest of the teacher selected to be the first civilian astronaut, the perspectives of her grieving daughter, the aspirations of elderly tourists who drive to Florida to watch flight, and the guilt felt by a NASA mechanic.

During the Area competition, four students received awards. Honorable Mention Actors were Alysha Gonzalez and Alexa Gonzalez, and Caleb De La Torre and Jannelle Rodriguez received All-Star Cast mentions.
