Memorial High School Student Council earns Top Awards in the State

McAllen, Texas – For outstanding achievement in leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, the McAllen Memorial Student Council has been recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) in the areas of Outstanding Student Council; Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health (DASH);  Pride and Patriotism; and Energy and Environment, as well as for submission of its Community Service Report. It has also has been recognized as a Sweepstakes Council.

The McAllen Memorial Student Council was also recognized for their project of uniting the GLSEN’s No Name-Calling Week and the Great Kindness Challenge and will be awarded the Top Video Project at the upcoming TASC Annual Conference.

TASC is the largest student council association in the world, and the videos recognized at its conference represent the most outstanding videos submitted from across Texas.

They will also receive the Top Project award. Of the 1200 TASC member schools, McAllen Memorial is one of only 10 high school student councils statewide to receive this highly-esteemed honor. Projects were evaluated based on how well they met their objectives; the amount of involvement from the council, the student body, the staff, and the community; originality, and overall success.

Patricia Rocha, Student Council President, expressed her excitement by saying “I am so proud of all the hard work we did and the recognition we will receive for Top Project and Top Video. It is incredible to think only 10 councils in the state receive this award. We are thankful to our school, McAllen ISD and TASC for providing us with the tools we needed to educate not only our school but our community.” It is worth mentioning that it is the second year in a row that the McAllen Memorial Student Council receives these highly coveted awards.

Additionally, Valeria Carpenter, Student Council Advisor at McAllen Memorial, has been nominated by the Texas Association of Student Councils District XVI as the 2017-18 High School Advisor of the Year, so she will join other outstanding advisors on stage to receive this recognition.

The TASC Annual Conference will take place April 14-16 in the city of Arlington, TX. This year’s conference will also have a “StuCo’s Got Talent” portion, where Sydney Ramon will represent not only McAllen Memorial but TASC’s District XVI.

“As student councils members across the state of Texas cross the stage to pick up their diplomas, more and more will be moving on to college and careers with a commitment to public service, civic participation, and the knowledge that they make a difference in their communities and their lives through service to others and participation in the democratic process,” said Terry Hamm, Director of Texas Association of Student Councils.

“I am constantly amazed at the contributions made by high school student council members under the guidance of exceptional Student Council advisors. Congratulations to these councils and their students for their dedication to service and commitment to improving their school, their communities, and their world. These students embody TASC’s dedication to student voice, student engagement, and student leadership.”

TASC is a non-profit serving high school and middle-level student councils in Texas.  Sponsored by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, its purposes are to develop leadership abilities in students, promote democracy as a way of life, and uphold high standards for local councils.  With approximately 1200 member schools, it is the largest state student leadership organization in the US.
