San Juan, Texas – PSJA Early College High School Senior Damian Luna will be representing the State of Texas and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA) at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference to be held in Louisville, Kentucky on June 25-29, 2018.
SkillsUSA Texas is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Founded in 1965 and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education, the association serves more than 335,000 member students and instructors each year in middle schools, high schools, and colleges. This diverse talent pipeline covers 130 trade, technical and skilled service occupations, the majority STEM-related.
As an integral part of career and technical education (CTE) in schools, SkillsUSA requires participants to be a part of their schools CTE programs such as law enforcement, nursing, automotive and welding, to name a few.
According to Gene Hernandez, the PSJA ECHS SkillsUSA Advisor and Welding Instructor, students met their eligibility to participate by being part of the CTE Welding Program at PSJA ECHS.
Luna advanced to the National competition after earning 1st place in the Job Skills Demonstration “O” category of the SkillsUSA State competition held in Corpus Christi, April 5-8. This category required the senior to demonstrate and explain an entry-level skill used in an occupational area, such as welding.
In addition to Luna, Yesenia Ramirez also proudly represented PSJA ISD at the State competition and earned 2nd place Job Skills Demonstration “A” contest, which required her to demonstrate a career objective in an occupational area.
