Economic Development Week was created by The International Economic Development Council in commemoration of its 90-year anniversary as the largest professional membership organization for economic developers. Economic developers are charged with generating economic growth, creating better jobs for residents and facilitating an improved quality of life. The industry remains as complex, challenging and rewarding as ever. The economic development efforts provided by economic developers are being showcased this week nationally. Members of Congress are also highlighting the work of our nation’s economic developers through special resolutions that are appearing in the Congressional Record. Barry Matherly, the Chair of the International Economic Development Council and the President of the Greater Richmond Partnership said, “We are so pleased that your town, city, county, region, or state is helping to celebrate the profession and the professionals that work hard to create opportunity for all citizens and their communities.

A series of events are planned during Economic Development Week, including a proclamation designating Economic Development Week in Hidalgo County at Hidalgo County Commissioners Court; a similar resolution was approved by the members of the Pharr City Council last week, declaring May 8-14 as Economic Development Week in Pharr. Other activities include a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the expansion of one of Pharr’s local cold storage facilities, Freshhouse Cold Storage/United Brokers, a mixer for economic development professionals and the Pharr business community, trade information workshops to inform and keep industry professionals updated on certain industry-specific requirements, and a luncheon to celebrate economic developers and industry representatives.

“Economic development is the backbone of our nation’s economy, and the City of Pharr is proud to anchor international trade and commerce through our port of entry, which helps to supplement business development and growth for the entire region,” said Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez. “We join with other communities across the country to recognize the important contributions that economic developers make to help our communities thrive,” he continued.

Pharr Economic Development Corporation Director Sergio Contreras added, “We are in a position to continue to foster international trade in South Texas. Our border ports of entry offer significant economic benefits with our trading partners in Mexico, which is Texas’ largest trading partner at $200 billion a year,” he continued.
