Pharr, Texas – The City of Pharr held their annual Christmas Posada to celebrate the holiday season on Saturday, December 1, 2018, in historic downtown Pharr. Hundreds of people joined the city in holiday festivities by participating in ice skating, listening to carolers, watching Christmas movies, and enjoying the many Christmas activities available to families.

“We had a great turnout and really enjoyed watching our Pharr community come out and celebrate all things Christmas,” said City Commissioner Ramiro Caballero. “There was something for every member of the family to enjoy,” he added.

The main attraction at this year’s Posada was the ice skating rink and snow slides. Children of all ages quickly lined up for a chance to slide down the snow, while others enjoyed time in the ice skating rink. The City of Pharr will keep the ice skating rink open until December 15, 2018, at $10 an hour, including the skates. The rink will be open from 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm on weekends and 5:00 pm -10:00 pm on weekdays.

“For many of the families in our community this was the first time they saw snow or experienced ice skating,” Commissioner Bobby Carillo stated. “The fact that we had the opportunity to give this experience to our community was truly special,” he added. “Everyone had a great time and it really put everyone in the holiday spirit,” he continued.

Families were greeted throughout the evening by live characters including the Grinch, Frozen’s Princesses Elsa and Anna, Buddy the Elf, Santa’s Reindeer, elves, and special guests Santa and Mrs. Clause, among others.

“We had a great idea of getting our employees involved in this year’s event and many of them volunteered to dress up in character,” said Interim City Manager Ed Wylie. “The children were especially excited when they would pass by or be greeted by one of the characters,” he continued.

A true community event, many students from nearby school districts participated by providing the beautiful caroling that could be heard emanating from downtown throughout the evening.

“The performances from our local students was just beautiful,” exclaimed Commissioner Eleazar Guajardo. “Between the snow, ice skating rink, and the music, it truly felt like we were transported to a winter wonderland,” he added. “Our community really enjoyed it and I know that we had a great evening enjoying the fun alongside them.”

The Posada also featured a variety of food vendors, live music, and Christmas activities such as a Christmas ornament decorating activity, a play performance of “A Tejano Christmas Carol” by the Pharr Community Theater, a photo booth with Santa, and an s’mores cookout. The event came to an end as city officials gathered together to officially light the City of Pharr’s Christmas Tree.

“The City of Pharr thanks everyone who worked hard to make this event a reality and all those who joined us in celebration of the Posada,” stated Commissioner Daniel Chavez. “Our planning committee worked for months to plan this event and everyone had a wonderful time,” he said.
