Sixteen UTRGV students had the experience of a lifetime this summer, during a study abroad trip to South Korea. From learning to cook traditional Korean dishes to practicing Taekwondo, UTRGV students spent two weeks studying the language and traditions of a culture previously unfamiliar to them. Led by Mijin Oh-Villarreal, a lecturer in the UTRGV Department of Writing and Language Studies, they participated in the Beginning Korean Studies II mini-semester course, but report the lessons reached far beyond language. The newly created Academy for Entrepreneurs, an initiative by UTRGV Continuing Education, will serve as the springboard for innovation and entrepreneurship activities in the Rio Grande Valley. One of the academy’s first efforts is the UTRGV Entrepreneurship Certificate Program (ECP), designed to build a community of innovative entrepreneurs who will learn what it takes to establish successful startups. This eight-week program will provide the coaching and support necessary to help entrepreneurs find success within their first year utilizing a blended learning format of online and in-class sessions.
