Forty-four energy-filled middle and high school robotics teams from across the Rio Grande Valley competed in a quadrathon challenge at the Pharr Events Center on Monday, to kick off UTRGV’s annual Hispanic, Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week. Students from as far as Laredo pitted their robots against competing teams. Each team was in charge of building its own robot out of Lego ® parts and programming it to compete in a number of competitions, including a maze, going up and down a ramp, and a search and rescue. The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation has established a $50,000 endowed scholarship to help support students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine who declare an intention to specialize in psychiatry, neurology or a related field in the neurosciences. The Randall Baker Endowed Scholarship is named in honor of the foundation’s former executive director, Randall “Randy” Baker, who retired from his post June 30. Ali Naqvi, a UTRGV legacy alumnus from Mission, has worked on movies and TV shows both behind and in front of the camera. During the last season of ‘Westworld’ – a science fiction Western series produced by HBO – one of the actors and his stand-in weren’t available, and Naqvi stood in on-screen for the actor. But his main work is behind the camera and on the latest season of “Westworld” was the producing director’s assistant.
