BROWNSVILLE, Texas — After surveying more than 3,000 patients about the challenges affecting their health, New HorizonHealth Center identified access to clothing as one of the most significant unmet needs in the Brownsville community. Inresponse, the health center has opened the New Horizon Care Closet, a free resource providing clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and other essential items to current patients.
The Care Closet was created to help address social needs that can directly impact health and well-being. While medical careremains at the center of New Horizon Health Center’s mission, the organization recognizes that access to clean clothing,personal hygiene products, and appropriate attire can influence confidence, employment opportunities, school attendance, and overall quality of life.
Located at 2137 E. 22nd St. in Brownsville, the Care Closet offers clothing for all ages and sizes, seasonal apparel, professional andwork attire, shoes, accessories, bags, and new or unopened personal hygiene products. All items are provided at no cost in awelcoming, judgment-free environment for current New Horizon Health Center patients.
The initiative reflects New Horizon Health Center’s commitment to addressing the factors outside of the exam room thatcontribute to healthier individuals and stronger communities. By helping remove barriers to basic necessities, the Care Closet supports patients in focusing on their health,families, education, and employment.
The health center is also calling on the community to help keep the Care Closet stocked through donations of gently used or newclothing, shoes in good condition, and new, unopened hygiene products. Donations can be dropped off at 2137 E. 22nd St., Brownsville, TX 78521, during regular business hours. The Care Closet is open:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Current New Horizon Health Center patients are eligible to access the Care Closet and may take the items they need at no cost.
