Judge Migdalia Lopez is currently a Juvenile Judge and has 39 years of legal experience, 27 of those years presiding over a number of courts: municipal, county court at law, district court, and juvenile court.

Accompanied by her husband, children, and grandchildren, Judge Migdalia Lopez announced her candidacy for the 13th Court of Appeals. 

Judge Migdalia Lopez is currently a Juvenile Judge and has 39 years of legal experience, 27 of those years presiding over a number of courts: municipal, county court at law, district court, and juvenile court.  

Judge Migdalia Lopez graduated from the Houston Law Center and went into private practice. Subsequently, she joined the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office. During her 10 years as an Assistant District Attorney, she tried a number of cases ranging from the sexual assault of a child to capital murder. She quickly rose through the ranks from a misdemeanor prosecutor to the First Assistant District Attorney.

Her faith in people and her community drove her to protect them from violent offenders and sexual predators. 

Judge Migdalia Lopez is a trailblazer for women’s advancement in the professional world. She became the first woman elected County Court at Law Judge in Cameron County and the first woman elected District Court Judge in both Cameron and Willacy Counties. She is fair and protects the Constitutions and laws of Texas and the United States of America.  

Judge Migdalia Lopez is tough, fair, and experienced. She presided over a number of high-profile cases. She was the Judge assigned to hear pre-trial motions for the Firestorm/Ford Explorer tire defect cases throughout Texas. 

She was Judge on the recent capital murder trials of two men convicted of murdering a Border Patrol agent who died in a shootout protecting his family. For 27 years, Judge Migdalia Lopez has practiced or presided over a wide range of trials: civil, criminal, family, probate, medical malpractice, personal injury, contracts, and construction to name a few.

Judge Migdalia Lopez has a strong work ethic and a strong character. The law enforcement community knows her as a Judge who is available to assist them when needed. 

Due to her reputation as an advocate for justice and willingness to do the right thing in the face of criticism, numerous FBI agents nominated Judge Migdalia Lopez for the FBI Citizens Academy from which she graduated. 

Her strong reputation is known throughout the state to such an extent that Governors have appointed her to numerous statewide committees.
