McAllen, Texas – It’s the Fourth Annual Operation Clean Sweep.  Cyclists, motorists, and runners will soon enjoy cleaner and safer roadways. The City of McAllen Public Works Department is joining a convoy of street sweepers across Hidalgo County. The project aims to keep designated bike lanes clear of debris.

“We started with Run, Ride and Share campaign to raise awareness about safety on the roadway and it only seemed obvious to keep road shoulders clean to keep cyclists, motorists, and runners safe,” said McAllen City Commissioner Veronica Whitacre. “This project has no city limits because the RGV is one big community.”

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Hidalgo County Precinct 2 and the cities of McAllen, Alton Edinburg, Pharr, San Juan, Alamo, Mission and La Villa will spearhead the major street sweeping effort. The cleanup will begin Tuesday, May 15 at 9:00 a.m., following a kick-off at the offices of The Monitor newspaper (Jackson and Nolana). The sweep is expected to be completed in one day.

“The sweepers will clean more than a 100 miles of roadway shoulders,” said Director Elvira Alonzo, McAllen Public Works. “Motorists should expect delays and are urged to observe traffic control signs.”

The Run Ride and Share campaign was initiated in May 2014 in an effort to increase the safe use of road shoulders and bike lanes and bring awareness to motorists and cyclists and runners to share the road responsibly.
