McAllen, Texas – Yesterday afternoon, Pepe Cabeza de Vaca officially filed to run for McAllen City Commissioner District 6.

“While some may choose not to mention a previous, unsuccessful bid for office,” Cabeza de Vaca said, “my close race in 2011 for District 6 commissioner against Jim Darling, who is now mayor of McAllen, inspired me to increase my involvement in city government and reinforced my passion for my city.” Cabeza de Vaca is grateful to Mayor Darling for his advice and mentorship since that race.

Cabeza de Vaca has served on the City of McAllen Planning and Zoning Board for over 10 years, serving for the last five years as chairman. He has worked for Hidalgo County as Assistant Chief of Staff for six years, first for Commissioner Eddie Cantu and currently for Commissioner David Fuentes. Cabeza de Vaca has been deeply involved with numerous civic organizations in McAllen, serving on the board of directors for the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen, Palmer Drug Abuse Program, and the American Cancer Society, to name a few.  He also has over 20 years of business experience. Cabeza de Vaca has a consistent history of community service, evidence of his dedication to the City of McAllen.  He has received numerous awards and recognition for both his community and business involvement

After 10 years on the Planning and Zoning Board and much deliberation and encouragement from fellow McAllen supporters, he decided running for District 6 commissioner was the next step in his efforts to serve the City of McAllen. Cabeza de Vaca will lead a campaign that will exemplify his passion for community involvement. He will focus on the concerns McAllen residents have expressed to him, including improving drainage, traffic, helping small businesses, and preserving our green spaces and parks.
