McAllen Independent School District leaders are asking voters to consider Proposition A, a $335 million bond proposal to address aging school facilities, overcrowding, and long-term infrastructure needs across the district.
During a recent presentation to the McAllen Citizens League, Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez outlined the district’s challenges and the reasoning behind the proposal. He said many of the district’s campuses are decades old and in need of significant repairs and upgrades.
Gutiérrez explained that the buildings’ age has created ongoing maintenance issues that are becoming increasingly difficult and costly to manage. He noted that the bond proposal is designed to address these conditions comprehensively rather than through temporary fixes.
Another issue highlighted during the presentation is the widespread use of portable classrooms. According to Gutiérrez, many students across the district have been attending classes in portable buildings due to space limitations in existing campuses. These structures, originally intended as short-term solutions, have remained in use for extended periods.
The proposed bond would fund improvements to existing facilities, reduce reliance on portable classrooms, and modernize learning environments for students. District officials say the plan is based on assessments conducted across all campuses to identify the most urgent needs.
Gutiérrez also addressed concerns about the financial impact on taxpayers. He stated that the district anticipates maintaining its current tax rate and that Proposition A is not expected to increase the overall tax rate.
Early voting for the bond election is scheduled from April 20 through April 28, with Election Day set for May 2. District officials continue to present information to community groups as voters consider the proposal.
