The McAllen Citizens League recently held its membership meeting after a COVID-19 hiatus in order to elect new officers and board members. The League has been serving its members and the public with membership luncheon meetings that offer programs covering community issues as well as informative sessions about education, healthcare, government, public safety, and many other topics.
The League has always been proactive in providing political candidate forums to inform their membership and promote voting in all elections. Most recently, MCL has formed a strong partnership with the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, where membership meetings are held.
The membership elected Judith Flores-Saldivar as president and Elva M. Cerda as first vice president. Both Saldivar and Cerda have been longterm active members of the League and members of the board. Saldivar is a local attorney in private practice focusing on family and immigration law. Cerda is a former long-term commercial banker in the area and now the director and founder of the McAllen Heritage Center in McAllen.
Chris Julian, former president, recently completed his long-term service to the MCL.
Saldivar said, “I am very proud to move forward and lead this long-term civic organization that has been in existence since 1954. We anticipate continuing to offer programs for our members in the near future.”
Newly elected board members include Olga Gabriel, owner of Affordable Art & Frame,;Cindy Trevino with the City of McAllen Convention Center; Gerry Garcia, vice president with the McAllen Chamber of Commerce; and John Della Maggoria, long term League member. Ernie Aliseda will remain on the board as an advisory director.
