McALLEN, Texas – The McAllen Chamber of Commerce announced it has earned a five-star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a distinction held by fewer than 2 percent of chambers nationwide.
The recognition was presented during a public celebration attended by business leaders and partners, highlighting the Chamber’s role in supporting economic development and small businesses in the region. Speakers emphasized that the accreditation reflects sustained performance, operational discipline, and a coordinated effort among local institutions.
Elizabeth Suarez, President and C.E.O. of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, stated that small businesses drive the local economy, noting that “90% of businesses in Hidalgo County are small businesses,” and described the Chamber as a “lifeline” for those enterprises. She said the accreditation underlines the organization’s impact on the business community.
Jorge Sanchez, Vice President of Economic Development, detailed the accreditation process, describing it as a rigorous, multi-section evaluation completed within two months. He reported that the Chamber achieved perfect scores in governance, finance, and technology, and highlighted its financial model, stating that 91% of its income is generated through programs and impact rather than membership dues. “There are more than 7,000 chambers across our nation, and only under 140 receive a five-star accreditation,” Sanchez said. “It’s a big deal.”
Sanchez also framed the achievement as validation of the Chamber’s strategy and performance. “This five-star accreditation is not just a finish line, it’s a third-party validation… that this new strategic vision is really working, and it’s proof that we’re building a top-tier chamber for our top-tier community,” he said.
Speakers repeatedly pointed to collaboration among the Chamber, the City of McAllen, Hidalgo County, and economic development partners as a key factor in reaching this milestone, describing the effort as a unified approach to regional growth.
The event also included recognition of community leaders who contributed to the Chamber’s progress and a moment of silence in honor of Robert Charles Norman “Bobby,” a longtime banking leader in the Rio Grande Valley and former member of the McAllen Foreign Trade Zone. The newly appointed 2026–2028 McAllen Poet Laureate, Gabriel Hugo Sanchez Martinez, was also present and recognized during the program.
Officials said the accreditation strengthens the Chamber’s position as a leading organization in business advocacy and economic development, reinforcing its role in supporting a growing, competitive regional economy.
