In the summer of 2018, Greg Manteufel’s life changed drastically after a fun-filled day at a birthday party in West Bend, Wisconsin. Surrounded by dogs, the avid painter could never have anticipated the ordeal that awaited him. Just days after the celebration, on June 26, he found himself grappling with an unexpected fever and weakness in his limbs. What seemed like routine symptoms soon escalated into a life-threatening situation, marking the beginning of an extraordinary tale of survival, resilience, and love for dogs.

The Onset of a Rare Infection

Greg’s initial symptoms of fever and limb weakness were the early signs of a rare and severe blood infection caused by Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium commonly found in the mouths of dogs and cats. Despite its rarity, this bacterium can cause devastating effects in humans, ranging from fever, diarrhea, and vomiting to severe complications like sepsis, fatal septic shock, and gangrene.

As Manteufel’s condition rapidly deteriorated, doctors delivered the harrowing news that his blood platelet count had plummeted to critically low levels, leaving him with a prognosis of just three hours to live. This dire prediction underscored in red the severity of his infection and the urgent need for medical intervention.

The battle that followed was both harrowing and inspiring. To save his life, Manteufel underwent numerous amputations, losing his forearms, legs, and parts of his nose. Yet, his spirit remained unbroken. Through these unimaginable challenges, he emerged as an example of resilience and determination, embodying the human spirit’s capacity to overcome even the most daunting adversities.

By October 2019, a year after his ordeal began, Manteufel’s journey to recovery had showcased his indomitable will. Learning to walk again with prosthetic legs and adapting to life without his hands, he demonstrated incredible adaptability and courage. Remarkably, amidst his recovery, Manteufel expressed his continued love for dogs, reflecting a surprising spirit of forgiveness and highlighting the deep bond between humans and their canine companions.

Greg Manteufel’s story is not just one of survival but also serves as a crucial reminder of the potential risks associated with Capnocytophaga canimorsus. While infections from this bacterium are rare, they can have severe consequences. Manteufel’s experience stresses the importance of awareness and the need for immediate medical attention if symptoms develop after close contact with dogs or cats.

Dogs: Our Best Friends with a Cautionary Tale

Despite the ordeal that Greg Manteufel endured, his story reinforces the message that dogs are our best friends, offering unconditional love and companionship. However, his experience reminds us of the rare but real risks associated with bacterial infections that can arise from our interactions with these beloved animals. It’s a call to cherish our bond with our pets while being mindful of our health and well-being.

Greg Manteufel’s journey demonstrates the strength of the human spirit, the power of resilience, and the enduring love between humans and their canine companions. His story is a powerful reminder of the unpredictable challenges life can throw our way and the incredible capacity to rise above them, underlined by an unbreakable bond of love and forgiveness.
