Maribel Cavazos is an insurance agent and owner of Global Insurance Agency in Mission Texas. The company offers home, auto, commercial, life, and supplemental insurance. She has been in business as of ten years ago, but has been in the industry for the last twelve.
Maribel said, “Well it started out as home insurance but then with everything that’s happened since 2012 after the hailstorms, now we are slowly changing to Medicare Advantage Plan, it’s a little bit of a mixture.”
She pointed out that they got into the insurance business by accident. She said, “Originally my husband and another gentleman (a friend) were going to open a delivery service/trucking company. However, I would have to credit my husband with initial idea to go into the insurance business instead. We decided that we would partner and open up an insurance agency.”
Maribel said that the partner’s wife was the one with 20 years of experience in the industry, so they went ahead and got the licenses and the business loan. “However, our partner left the business because of a divorce.”
According to her, the exciting part of the insurance business is that they help people.
What challenges have you had in this business? “At the beginning, it was not having enough experience, but we were still able to call our former partner for insurance scenarios and seek advice.”
Maribel’s husband is Jose Hernandez. “Jose and I have been married for 20 years. He is part owner of their insurance business but he also runs another business as owner/operator; he is a truck driver.”
Maribel gives credit to her parents; her mom for instilling in her to be independent, and work hard for your money so that you don’t have to depend on anybody else; always be on time. She taught me to work at looking my best. That was her big thing.” She added that her dad instilled in her a strong work ethic, because he was always working.”
“Our immediate plan is to eventually get all our girls to do the same thing that we do which is the Medicare Advantage plans because we help people. That way they could be at the same level of earnings.” She continued, “We want to give everybody that works for us an opportunity to grow.”

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a type of Medicare health plan offered by a private company that contracts with Medicare to provide you with all your Part A and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans include Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, Medicare services are covered through the plan and aren’t paid for under Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans offer prescription drug coverage.
When they have traditional Medicare, they have to pay 20 percent out of pocket and if they end up in the hospital, that’s a very big chunk. With the Medicare Advantage, those policies help them cover some of that 20 percent so it’s less out of pocket.”
What does something like that cost for a 65-year-old? “Zero to little premium. It’s zero dollars or a low premium. It just depends on the type of plan they choose.”
