EDINBURG, Texas – Congratulations are in order for the City of Edinburg Public Works Department. The department was recognized by the Texas Chapter of the American Public Works Association this week in Waco. On Wednesday, June 28, 2023, city staff attended the organization’s statewide conference and came back as the winners of the 2023 Exceptional Performance Award for Safety in recognition of their Real-Time Hydrological System (RTHS).
The department’s RTHS is a progressive flood management project that allows staff to access up-to-date information on flood risks every five minutes. The data enables the Public Works Department to assess the vulnerability of subdivisions and roads throughout the city, ensuring that the community has effective response measures in place in the event of a natural disaster or severe storm.
“Receiving the 2023 Exceptional Performance Award for Safety is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the Edinburg Public Works team,” Public Works Director Vince Romero said. “Our Real-Time Hydrological System keeps us ahead of the flood and ensures the well-being of our community. This recognition inspires us to continue riding the tide of excellence.”
The Public Works Department is actively working towards expanding the Real-Time Hydrological System. Two flood indicators have already been installed in different areas of the city as the project develops in an effort to limit the impact of flooding in neighborhoods.
