EDINBURG, Texas – Edinburg Police Officer Fernando Cervantes was recognized at the Texas State Capitol on Friday, June 26, 2026, receiving the state’s highest honor for valor after putting himself in harm’s way to stop an armed suspect.

Officer Cervantes received the prestigious Law Enforcement Achievement Award for Bravery from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The state-level accolade honors law enforcement officers who exceed the normal call of duty, demonstrating exceptional courage and a profound commitment to public safety in the face of imminent danger.

The award stems from an incident on September 16, 2025, at a Stripes gas station in Edinburg. Officer Cervantes was the first to arrive on the scene following reports of an erratic individual armed with knives attempting to force his way into the busy convenience store, which was occupied by multiple customers and employees.

With seconds to react, Officer Cervantes immediately placed himself directly in harm’s way to protect the civilians trapped inside. After his initial attempts to verbally de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful, and with the threat rapidly escalating, Officer Cervantes took decisive action to neutralize the danger. His swift response restored safety to the scene without any harm coming to innocent bystanders.

“Officer Cervantes’ actions on that day represent the very pinnacle of what it means to wear the badge,” said Police Chief Jaime Ayala. “Faced with a terrifying, fast-moving situation, he did not hesitate to put his own life between a dangerous threat and the citizens of Edinburg. This statewide honor is incredibly well-deserved, and the entire department and community stand proud of his bravery.”

TCOLE  presents these awards annually to a select group of officers across the state who exemplify valor, outstanding service, and dedication to the communities they protect.
