RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Thursday that specialty license plates with UTRGV’s V logo are now available for purchase at GoUTRGV.com/Plates.
Each license plate costs $30 per year for a randomly generated license plate and $70 per year for custom letters and numbers.
A portion of the proceeds goes back to UTRGV in support of student-athletes.
“As we continue to #RallyTheValley, showing off your UTRGV pride with a license plate sends a powerful message not only throughout the Valley, but across the state of Texas,” UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. “I am hopeful our campus community, alumni, and supporters will join us in showing off our Vaqueros spirit in hopes UTRGV is represented on the highways and byways throughout the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.”
There is an approximately 2-3 turnaround time after purchase for the plates to be ready. The plates will be shipped to the local county tax assessor office, where they can be picked up in the line for new registration. Customers will need to bring their current plates, registration sticker and driver’s license, along with a picture of the driver’s license of any other drivers to whom the vehicle is registered. Customers will then be given the new plates and a new registration sticker corresponding to the new plate letters and numbers.
Additional fees may be collected at the county tax assessor office to establish a single expiration date for both the specialty plates and your vehicle registration. They may have to prorate either the current vehicle registration fee or plate fee to synchronize the vehicle registration period with the first annual period for the plates. This fee may include up to an additional 12 months of plate fees in addition to the initial plate purchase fee for a new vehicle with a two-year registration.
For customers renewing a registration, a current state vehicle inspection must be on file. The new registration sticker and license plate will have corresponding expiration dates for the month before the plates were purchased. For example, customers that have a current expiration month of September that purchase plates in August will have an expiration month of July, even if the plates aren’t picked up until September.
Customers will have the option of renewing their plates for another year or opting into a multi-year renewal at the conclusion of the first year, a process that will correspond with vehicle registration renewal. Customers are encouraged to call the local county tax assessor office to confirm their plates have arrived before going to pick them up.
