Edinburg, Texas – District clerk staff presented a check today to Mujer Unidas/Women Together of McAllen in the amount of $3,000 as a part of their Blues for Bucks Workplace Fundraising Campaign. The staff-lead program allows employees to wear jeans on Fridays in exchange for a $5 donation. The funds are collected for a six-month period then presented to a nonprofit organization that is randomly selected from a pool of nonprofit entities submitted by office staff

“Mujeres Unidas serves as a beacon for the many victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in our community,” said Laura Hinojosa, District Clerk. “I am elated that Mujeres Unidas was selected as the recipient of our fundraising efforts and that my staff was so willing to contribute to an organization that gives hope and provides resources to so many in need.”

Mujeres Unidas has been serving residents in the Rio Grande Valley since 1978 when a group of local women established a hotline for victims of domestic violence. Over the course of 32 years the nonprofit has expanded its services to include a twenty four-hour shelter, a transitional housing complex, outreach shelters, and crisis intervention counseling for victims of all ages and genders.
