McALLEN, Texas – Birds are often heard long before they are seen. Learning to recognize their songs can transform an ordinary walk into an exciting wildlife adventure. On Saturday, August 15, at 10:30 a.m., Quinta Mazatlán invites the community to Birding for Beginners: ID by Sound, an interactive workshop led by Environmental Education Specialist and longtime birder Isidro Montemayor Jr. Participants will learn how to identify common Rio Grande Valley birds by their calls and songs using simple techniques they can practice in their own backyards. The beginner series continues on Saturday, August 29, at 10:30 a.m., with an eBird Workshop, where participants will discover how to use the free eBird app to record bird sightings, find local birding hotspots, and contribute to bird conservation around the world.
A Rio Grande Valley native, Montemayor has worked as a park ranger and environmental educator in Texas, Louisiana, Oregon, and Alaska. Today, he shares his passion for birds and nature with visitors at Quinta Mazatlán through engaging programs for all ages. Workshops are $5 per person, and pre-registration is required.
For those ready to continue their birding journey, Quinta Mazatlán also offers Urban Forest Birding with Isidro every Saturday from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Guided bird walks are included with regular park admission and are perfect for beginners and experienced birders alike.
