Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to host first of its kind survival conference in the RGV

Edinburg, TX— South Texas is a premier location for hunting and fishing, yet many people are unaware of the hidden dangers that these sports present. In collaboration with Dr. Kip Owen, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance developed the Brush Country Medicine and Survival Conference to educate and enlighten the medical community, first responders, and the general public about potential injuries a person could face while hunting, fishing, or enjoying the outdoors in South Texas. This first of its kind conference will be hosted on Saturday, October 18th at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
“This will be a fun and informative event for people who enjoy the South Texas brush country,” states Dr. Kip Owen, local sports medicine orthopedic surgeon. “We encourage anyone who spends time outdoors, be it fishing, hunting, hiking, or sightseeing, to attend.”
The Brush Country Medicine and Survival Conference will cover how to treat injuries and medical emergencies while in the brush country, such as snake bites, spider bites, poison ivy, gunshot wounds, heat related illness, drowning and other emergent issues that may arise. Conference speakers were identified based on their expertise in the subject matter. Participants will hear from world-renowned physicians, Border Patrol agents, Texas Wildlife Commission officers, and military-trained security personnel. The desired goal is that by taking this course, there will be an increased awareness among physicians, first responders, and the general public about medical issues that could arise while hunting or fishing in the remote brush country of South Texas. And how to address those issues quickly and effectively.
Who Should Attend:
This course was designed for all physicians, allied health professionals, first responders, law enforcement officers, EMS, EMT, and firefighters as well as the local community.
Learning Objectives:
• Discuss how to treat injuries such as snake bites, spider bites, poison ivy, foot blisters.
• Recognize the approaches needed when faced with heat illness or frostbite.
• Review what to do in case of drowning/ near drowning.
• Identify what you need to survive in the brush country.
• Describe Texas Wildlife and Conservation guidelines.
• Discuss border safety when confronted by non-hunters.
• Identify the nearest medical facility for emergency treatment.
