Honoring all veterans a tradition implemented in which all Commissioners Court Meetings begin with the Pledge of Allegiance led by a veteran. On Wednesday, the Commissioners Court was honored by having a 94-year-old World War II Veteran lead the pledge.

Private Garza is a U.S. Army Veteran who served from 1944 – 1946. Mr. Garza was born Jan. 1926 in Yorktown, Texas.  In 1937, his family moved to Elsa.  He attended schools in Edinburg, Monte Alto, and Elsa.  As a child, he and his father worked in the fields as farm laborers until 1944 and was drafted by the U.S. Army at 18.  After training, he was shipped to Europe where he fought with the 415th Infantry Regiment as a Rifleman. He received several medals and decorations including the Combat Infantry Badge and two Bronze Stars for valor.  After being discharged in 1946, he returned to Elsa where he became a farmer.  In 1954, he married Esther B. Garza (deceased) and was blessed with three children. Mr. Garza currently lives on a farm in Elsa and raises cattle.  When physically possible, he is active in the Elsa V.F.W. post #7473 and enjoys visiting with friends and family.
