WASHINGTON– U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced he has cosponsored the First Step Act after securing new changes to address the concerns of Senate Republicans and law enforcement:

“After listening to the concerns of our conference and law enforcement community, I’ve been working to improve this legislation so a majority of Senate Republicans can support it. I appreciate those willing to work with me, rather than point fingers, and I expect these changes will result in additional Republican and law enforcement support,” said Sen. Cornyn. “This is welcome progress for the criminal justice reform effort, of which I’ve long been an advocate because of the success we’ve achieved in Texas.”

“Texas is proof positive that you can close the revolving door of incarceration, reduce crime, and save taxpayer dollars at the same time. The end of this Congress is fast approaching and our to-do list is long, but I believe the revised First Step Act should be a priority.”

After talking with his colleagues and the law enforcement community, Sen. Cornyn requested that the following new changes be made to the First Step Act in addition to those already announced:

·         Exclude all firearms offenders under 924(c) from benefitting from earned time credits.

·         Limit to 12 months the use of earned timed credits for supervised release.

·         Require the Bureau of Prisons to revoke prerelease custody for prisoners who commit non-technical violations.
