WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has awarded $45,500 to the Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

This funding will help support fellows in the program to cover tuition, fees, stipend, and a one-time travel cost for the upcoming Transportation Research Board Annual (TRB) Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“I commend the U.S. Department of Transportation for this award and applaud UTRGV’s involvement in the DDETFP,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “This is how we keep our communities on the road to success – by encouraging and assisting bright minds in the midst of post-secondary education and empowering them to develop the infrastructure solutions of tomorrow.”

“Student success and expanding educational opportunities are two of UTRGV’s core priorities, and these grants will help enhance the academic experience of our students,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey. “I thank Congressman Gonzalez and everyone at UTRGV who assisted in obtaining this grant.”

DDETFP was developed in to assist students pursuing degrees in transportation-related disciplines. UTRGV utilizes the fellowship program through its University Transportation Center for Railway Safety (UTCRS) in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Interested students can receive awards from $1,500 – $10,000.

In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Gonzalez remains committed to keeping federal grants, like UTRGV’s DDETFP funding, flowing to the 15th District of Texas. The congressman encourages students to seize these opportunities and become valuable assets. For more information on how prospective UTRGV students can apply, click here.
