January 26, 2026- Residents across the Rio Grande Valley are bracing for one of the coldest nights of the season as a strong cold front pushes through the region, sending temperatures steadily downward and creating near-freezing conditions by early Tuesday morning.
According to regional forecasts, temperatures will begin falling rapidly after sunset Monday evening. By 7 p.m., readings are expected to dip into the upper 40s, with winds adding an extra chill. By 9 p.m., temperatures are forecast to reach the low 40s, continuing a steady decline through the late evening hours.
As the night progresses, colder air will settle in across the Valley. By midnight, temperatures are expected to fall into the mid- to upper 30s, with many inland areas already approaching freezing. The coldest conditions are anticipated between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday, when temperatures may drop to the low 30s, with some locations briefly reaching or dipping below 32 degrees.
Skies are expected to remain mostly clear overnight, allowing heat to escape more rapidly and contributing to the sharp temperature drop. Winds will be light but persistent, making conditions feel even colder during the early morning hours.
By Tuesday morning, temperatures will begin to slowly rebound after sunrise. Afternoon highs are expected to reach the low to mid-60s, bringing more comfortable conditions after a frigid start to the day. Skies will remain mostly sunny, and no precipitation is expected.
Officials urge residents to take precautions tonight by protecting sensitive plants, pets, and outdoor plumbing. Those traveling early Tuesday morning should dress in layers and allow extra time for cold conditions.
The cold snap is expected to be brief, with temperatures returning closer to seasonal averages later in the week.
