Texas Border Business
The City of McAllen is seeking applicants for mortgage assistance for McAllen residents who have fallen behind on their monthly payment, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is designed to help residents who are already behind. Residents must also meet the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (H.U.D.) guidelines, whose household income is 80 percent below the area median income and are not currently receiving mortgage assistance due to COVID-19 impact from any other agency. Thanks to a federal grant award from the Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs, McAllen homeowners are now eligible for assistance through the Texas Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program. The award of $350,000 should be able to assist families for six months of mortgage assistance: five months of arrears and one current month.
“We are grateful to the State of Texas for providing this award so that we may help residents in our community who have been impacted in one way or another by COVID-19 and it has affected their ability to pay their mortgage and keep their homes,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “We hope that this mortgage assistance program will help our McAllen residents get back on track as we continue to navigate through the hardships caused by the pandemic.”
The mortgage assistance will be available starting on August 2, 2021 and the application can be found at www.mcallen.net/mortgageassistance.
For questions on what is a qualifying COVID-19 impact, or for any other information related to the process, please send an email to the City of McAllen Grant Administration Department at cdbg@mcallen.net or call (956) 681-1030.
