Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is now hiring Border Patrol Processing Coordinators in McAllen, El Paso, and Yuma, AZ to perform administrative tasks related to the intake and processing of individuals apprehended by Border Patrol agents. The position will also assume responsibilities for transporting individuals and property in Border Patrol custody, as well as a custodial watch of detainees in hospitals.

This year, as Vice-Chair of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, Congressman Cuellar secured $10 million in the House-passed spending bill to create and hire 200 additional Border Patrol Processing Coordinators.  This funding will provide CBP with continued resources to efficiently process detainees while ensuring their proper treatment.

“As a result of the large influx of migrants this past summer, about 40% of the Border Patrol agents on the Southwest border were conducting processing, transportation, feeding, and cleaning duties instead of working on frontline law enforcement. This caused massive delays at ports of entry, costing the United States millions of dollars and jeopardizing our national security,” said Congressman Cuellar.

“These new positions will help streamline trade at our ports of entry as well as improve security along the border by allowing Border Patrol agents to focus on their law enforcement priorities. As the Vice-Chair of Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, I am committed to supporting CBP and funding the necessary resources for our country’s national security and economic prosperity.”

The Processing Coordinator serves three primary purposes:

  1. Allow U.S. Border Patrol agents (BPA) to focus on law enforcement duties.
    1. ~40% of BPA diverted from border security mission
    2. That’s ~2,500 of 6,000 agents in the Rio Grande Valley, El Paso, and Yuma Sectors
  2. Provide an entry-level opportunity for future BPAs
  3. Provide cost-effective processing of persons in Border Patrol custody

Border Patrol Processing Coordinator position is currently open to Displaced Federal employees requesting special priority selection consideration under the Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) and Displaced Federal employees requesting special priority selection consideration under the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP).

Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol in the following locations:
