Edinburg – The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce 2019 Man and Woman of the Year, Carlos and Sister Guerra, Owners of La Muñeca Cattle Company. Carlos and Sister Guerra throughout a lifetime of community involvement, have consistently demonstrated such qualities as compassion and a selfless dedication to the needs of others in their community.

Carlos’ great grandmother Antonia came from Mier, Mexico in the early 1807’s in search of a better life for her family. The La Muñeca brand was registered in 1873, and the Guerra’s are still branding their cattle with this world renown brand.  Carlos began in the registered cattle business with his first 4-H project, a Red Angus bull name Pancho, and has been involved in registered cattle, 4-H, FFA and helping our youth ever since. Carlos says he is blessed to live a dream life doing what I have always dreamed of doing.

In 1989, Carlos and Sister purchased all the registered cattle from Guerra Brothers and created La Muñeca Cattle Company, a family owned and operation cattle ranch with Simbrah and Brahman cattle.

For 30 years, Carlos and Sister Guerra have hosted the La Muñeca Field Day, an annual event the first Saturday of October, that bring kids from all over South Texas to compete in livestock, hay judging and weight guessing contests. Speakers from across the state come to talk to 4-H and FFA kids about the importance of agriculture in our everyday lives.  La Muñeca Ranch also hosts several cattle shows throughout the year.

Carlos and Sister’s record of volunteerism is quite extensive, both were involved with the inception of the Linn San Manuel Community Improvement Corporation, which has raised funds to support Brewster School, St. Anne’s Catholic Church, and the Linn San Manuel Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years. Sister served as the Club Manager and Adult Leader of the Linn San Manuel 4-H Club for more than 20 years. Carlos and Sister also served on the Brewster PTO and the Edinburg North FFA Booster Club. The Hidalgo County 4-H Foundation Board bestowed the title of Honorary Members to Carlos and Sister for their community service. They are also actively involved in TJSSA, the Texas Junior Simbrah and Simmental Association, and the American Junior Simbrah Roundup.

Carlos and Sister were instrumental in the formation of the South Texas Agriculture Roundup or the STAR show, which provides our 4-H and FFA kids a second opportunity to showcase their animal projects. The Star Gala, which provides funds for the STAR show, was first hosted at La Muñeca Ranch and grew to be so successful that it had to be moved to the Boggus Convention Center in Pharr.

In August of 1980, Victor, Carlos’ youngest brother was killed in a camping accident, and the Guerra family created a scholarship fund to honor his memory.  Every spring, the Guerra Family interview graduating seniors from Edinburg and San Isidro, and award them memorial scholarships to help with their college careers.

Carlos and Sister have four children Laura, Carlos, Victor and Cristina. Carlos and Sister have instilled their commitment to giving back to their children, and all four of their children are actively involved in many charities as well. Carlos and Sister also enjoy spending time with their five grandchildren, who are continuing in the Guerra tradition of showing cattle and are active in 4H.

One’s greatest legacy to the world is to leave the world a better place that they found it and through the thousands of hours spent in the betterment of their communities, Carlos and Sister Guerra have definitely achieved that honor.

An Installation ceremony will also be held to recognize Mr. Hiren Govind, owner and operator of Best Western Plus Edinburg Inn & Suites and Townplace Suites By Marriott, as incoming President of the Board for the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce. The Edinburg Chamber will also be recognizing the Chamber Ambassador of the Year; Letty Flores, with The Monitor, the Outstanding Leadership Award recipient; Leticia Leija, Director of the Dustin M.
