Steve Hoyuela Jr., a 24-year-old student at South Texas College, is working toward an associate degree in Diesel Technology, inspired by his love for hands-on work and the essential role of diesel in powering heavy equipment.

“I enjoy working with diesel equipment because it’s challenging,” Hoyuela explained. “It’s also exciting to know how important diesel is for the machines that keep everything moving.”

Hoyuela first considered a career in welding, encouraged by his father, but after a year working with diesel machinery in the railroad industry, he found his true passion in diesel technology.

“I traveled a lot, working on diesel engines, but I missed my family, so I came home and looked for something that I’d really enjoy,” he said.

Choosing STC was a natural fit for Hoyuela, not only because of its respected diesel program, but also due to the influence of his mother, Sharon R. Hoyuela, an STC Medical Assistant Technology instructor in the Health Administrative Services department.

“My mom always spoke highly of STC,” Hoyuela shared. “She told me it was a supportive place, and she was right.”

In addition to his classes, Hoyuela stays active on campus, participating in the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Student Leadership Academy (SLA).

“Being part of SGA and SLA pushes me to stay involved and meet new people,” he said. “It’s a great way to build connections and grow as a leader.”

With graduation set for May, Hoyuela dreams of opening a diesel shop with friends.

“Running my own shop would be amazing, but working with a big company would also be a solid path,” he said. “I want a career that’s stable, fulfilling and makes my family proud.”

Reflecting on his motivation, Hoyuela mentioned a quote that keeps him going: “At the end of the day, it’s you versus you,” he said. “You’re the one who sets your own limits, so I’m pushing myself to make the most of every opportunity.”

Hoyuela is excited to begin his career in diesel technology, bringing his skills, dedication and respect for the industry to whatever lies ahead.
